Humans have been finding for ways to originate movable light sources since the beginning of history. Tree branches gave way to torches which were later substituted by candles and kerosene lamps. A German scientist, Dr. Carl Gassner, created the first battery in 1888.

The first flashlight was invented in 1898 by Conrad Hubert. He worked alongside David Misell, who would go on to develop the tubular flashlight. Conrad Hubert's company, The American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing business filed several patents linked to flashlights in 1898. (Hubert's business would later become Eveready.)
